These have two functions:-
When negotiating broken waves going out through the surf, the deflection of oncoming waves keeps the cockpit dry and free from a lot of water entering the cockpit of the ski and keeping the ski light, which will assist acceleration through to the open water.
In open ocean runs when the nose of the ski digs into the swell in front of you or when you are driving through a swell, the deflection of the water along the deck again helps to keep the foot well area free of water.
